Last week I took to Central Park with my sweet and stunning friend Tamar. It was a very laid back and chill shoot but the results were amaze. It was such a great, relaxed time. We were both so comfortable with each other and I think the photos show that. She was a joy to work with.

An Apple-Picking Good Time, Heaven is Just Two Hours Outside the City

Went up-state two weekends ago with some of the girls. We rented a car and drove out of the city with a blasting apple-picking road trip mix and dunkin donut bagels in hand. It was gorgeous weather for apple picking and a hay ride through the Stoneridge apple orchard. We ended the glorious day with a diner and Dairy Queen blizzards. Heaven.

I'm starting a new photo project with all my close girl friends. The idea is to do a solo shoot with each of them sort of bringing out different sides of their personalities. The first one I shot was with the lovely and stupidly talented Haley Strode. Haley is a phenomenal actress, born and bread in Kentucky but now lives in LA. I wanted a soft, girlie feel for her shoot, bringing out the Southern girl but still keeping the big city as a background. So, we threw in a bike, cowboy boots and a pink dress and shot on a breezy summer evening at sunset on the cobble stone streets of Dumbo in Brooklyn. I love how it turned out. Take a look.

Irreverent & Beautiful Friends Make for the Best Birthday EVER

Sooooooo, I wanted to post these on facebook but I can't at this very moment. So blog it tis. I had the best birthday weekend ever. First, we celebrated the birth of the lovely Haley Strode at a diner in the LES with cheese fries and dessert, obvs. Then we did a double bday get together at Loreley Biergartenon/Dark Room on Sat. Lots of lovlies came and lots of beer and whiskey was had. On Monday, which was my official day of birth, the whole gang spent the day together. First, we had amazing breakfast at Balthazar, followed by shopping and galavanting in SoHo. That night we all met up at Bryant, drank wine, ate salad and watched the terrible/amazing Carousel. We laughed and yelled and were down right irreverent through the whole thing, obvs. It was the perfect day with the perfect people. Obviously I documented.

I went home for ten days a couple of weeks ago. It was one of my best trips home. I spent a lot of time with my family and driving around the country. I miss the South so much. The land, the people, the air....everything. This trip I really got to hang around the town my parents live in and explore the people and places that make it such a great little town. It's not much. Probably nothing at all to people up here but I just couldn't get enough of it. There is so much character and expression in every home on every corner and in the faces of the people who live there. Southerners are so welcoming and open. It was amazing how they would just let me in their homes and lives to take their photos. I really met some amazing and beautiful people.

My friends and I are obsessed with Patti Smith. We've immersed ourselves in her songs, poetry, films and most of all her book Just Kids. She is inspiring, poetic and embodies all the thoughts and ideas we as artists strive to become. We were lucky enough to see her perform a benefit concert in Jersey a couple of weeks ago. It was amazing. Breathtaking. A true religious experience. Her voice was incredible, sounding just as clear and strong as it did on her first album, Horses. She moved with this ethereal beauty, just slightly gliding her arms back and forth on top of the air. It was mesmerizing. Several times she would step away from the mic and come to the edge of the stage to graze the tops of our outstretched fingers with her hands.....this ageless icon towering over us. My heart pounded for the entire 1 hour and 45 min set which really felt like a mere 15 mins. It was one of those experiences where you want to remember every single sight, sound and smell but just a few mins after it is over you can barely recall anything. Luckily we made our way to the very front and I was able to snap some great shots.

A few weekends ago the crew and I went and saw The Grates at Brooklyn Bowl. It was Amazeballs. Patience Hodgson, the lead singer, is incredible. Not only can she rock a fully sequined leotard & gold high top sneakers but she can wail her face off. The whole band was great and one of the most fun concert experiences I'v ever had. They had so much engry and just seemed to be having so much freakin fun up there. Patience even came down to the audience at one point and danced it out with our group. Here are my shots!!

Sunday was one of those perfect New York days. One of those days where you know exactly why you live here. It started with a late mimosa soaked brunch with the best friends. Benny's Burritos likes to pour them and keep on pouring, let me tell you. We sat there for nearly two hours in loud irreverent laughter. It was bliss. Then in our mimosa haze we took to the streets of the meat packing district, the Highline and the top of the Gansevoort Hotel (you know) with camera and cloves in hand, obvs. Eventually making our way to the LES for some intense life convo and bottomless Australian beer at Sunburnt Cow and some oldies rock & $2 Bud-light at Saint Jerome's. Looking back on the 525 pictures we/I took (yes, 525. we were a tad excessive) I just realize how incredible our 20-something life is. Please, excuse me while I get real annoying and slightly self indulgent. I'm just blown away by the life that I'm aloud to have and the people I'm aloud to spend that life with. It's going to be incredible when I'm 60 to look back at these photos and realize how young, happy, pretty and yes sometimes extremely cocky we were.

A Blogger Who Writes Sweet Words About a Southern Girl with an Affinity for Flowers

Fellow Blogger Peter, wrote a wonderful and sweet short story about a photo I took of a dear friend of mine, Corrie. Peter, an amazing writer and apparently clairvoyant, really nailed some of Corrie's true life attributes just by looking at this photo (they have never met or spoken.) Please enjoy. “But I don’t HAVE an accent,” she said. With an accent. “Tell him I don’t have an accent, y’all.”

Looking from one friend to another.
Messy ponytail bouncing.
I just stared.
I may have blinked.
A couple times.
Every syllable dripped with sweetness.
But not too much. You know?
It was barely above a whisper, her telling me that she sneaks a flower home from each park outing with her friends. She saves them all.
She saves them all.
If there was a book about how to get me to become quickly smitten, I’d believe that she’d read, or maybe written, it.
If there was a book about how to get me to become quickly smitten…
That would not sell very well.
At some point, I was sick of the group conversations and really just wanted to hear this girl’s story.
That was twelve minutes after I arrived.
But I waited patiently.
Until fifteen minutes after I arrived.
I invited her to feed the ducks with me, explaining simply that, “The ducks may starve if we don’t. Would you want that to happen? Would you? Poor little baby duckies…”
She tried an angry freckled nose scrunch.
But got up off of the blanket, reaching out for my hand, that instinctively appeared, to help her to her feet.
I hated myself for letting it go as we started walking.
And we talked.
And I tried to learn every single fact that I could.
From what she said. From what she left out.
I did pretty well.
Moving to the city had pulled the sheets off of a fashion sense that had been for too long merely peeking out from under the covers.
She missed her family.
Sometimes.
The beginning of every new day excited her.
She always felt bad for the first person eliminated from any reality show competition.
She said my name differently than anyone else on earth.
I liked her version the most.
Pretty early on, I asked for her phone number.
I’d like to tell you that I thought of some creative way to ask. Something that would make a good story for her to tell her friends.
But all I said was, “I think you’re great. I’d really love your number.”
“If we’re meant to meet again, it will happen. Fate brought us together once…” she said, in a voice just quieter than the sound of my heart breaking.
Sure. Fate. And me begging, bribing and a mildly threatening a mutual friend. Who, by the way, said “I thought you liked brunettes!” and then I “bup bup bup”ed her until she agreed to let me join them at the park.
“We met once before. Do you remember?” she asked, looking out over the pond.
Did I remember?
“Vaguely,” I laughed — through my pain.
I don’t think she got the joke.
Then I told her where. When. And what she was wearing. (I know. I know. Too much.)
She smiled. “Maybe you remember a little.”
I pulled the bread into little pieces.
I handed them to her.
She threw them to the ducks.
She hit one of the ducks, gently, with a little piece.
She apologized.
The others yelled to us that it was time to eat.
I was opposed to this idea.
But smiled and passed her the last morsel of bread.
She tossed it to a baby duck.
And she watched to make sure that he got it.
And she smiled.
We walked back.
We joined the others.
The rest of the afternoon went by in a blur.
Everyone chatted, but she and I sat next to each other and playfully bantered.
She asked questions.
I answered.
Which, frankly, is a bit odd for me.
When she dropped a southern phrase that her grandma used frequently, I laughed.
Hard.
But then it was time for her to go.
A work event.
I recommended her quitting her job.
Maybe getting some kind of adorableness grant.
She told me to process for getting one of those is “like, so political.”
I had to do it.
I had to.
I leaned in and asked for her number again.
“Not today,” she whispered.
My crest was fallen.
I faked a smile.
She hugged me.
After a delay, I hugged back.
She waved to everyone, picked up her flip flops and walked away.
I tried not to watch her go.
It was not an overwhelming success.
I stayed for a while after that.
Not because I was enjoying the conversations about artists I had never heard of, or foods I wouldn’t eat at gunpoint.
But because…
I just didn’t want the day to end.
When I felt like my mood was darkening too much to put up with conversations, I stood up.
I grabbed my shirt and put it on.
It seemed heavier.
I reached into the pocket and felt something. I pulled it out.
It was a flower.
A pretty little white flower.
There was a piece of paper, wrapped around the stem.
I unrolled it.
It was a name. Her name.
And her phone number.

Spring Has Sprung and My Friends and I are Overly Estatic

Spring has FINALLY reached NYC and my friends and I are beyond happy. Exuberant. Joyous. Thrilled. Falling all over ourselves with excitement. It's definitely been the theme of the day with Central Park picnics and Sunday brunches being planned for the impending 70 degree weather we are promised, Tasti D being consumed for lunch, poems being written and new music being discovered for our summer play-lists. It's been an inspiring and happy day. In honor of all that I thought I would post some of my fave summer/spring shots I've taken in the city just to get us really hot and bothered. Mississippi Monday: The General Store Still Lives

The South is such a beautiful, quirky and amazing place to be from. It's also where I've taken most of my favorite photos. I'm starting a new feature every Monday to share my gorgeous and sometimes odd shots from home. I understand that it is Tues but I really want to start Mississippi Monday today. I meant to start yesterday but forgot. Besides we do things slower in the South anyway so by starting MS Monday on Tuesday really fits perfectly. Get me? No? It's ok if you don't.

Only in the South are there still general stores like this and still general store owners like this. I'm also pretty sure Southerners are the only ones who say General Store. I get it from my dad.

With Boredom Comes the Act of Weird Sciencing My Perf Man

So, this being a photo blog and all I don't usually post without...well photos. However, I've been super busy with work and haven't had time of my own to shoot anything new. So, I wanted to share with you a thought I had today. I just started thinking of what the perfect man would be and how I would go about getting that said perfect man. John Hughes had the right idea! So, here goes. My perfect man if I were to put on a bra hat and weird science myself a soul-mate.

He would have Conan's humor, Tom Welling's cheekbones, Zooey Deschanel's whimsy, Ryan Gosling's mystique, Johnny Cash’s swagger, Dempsey's hair, Ledger’s (r.i.p) accent, the pop culture savvy of Lorelai Gilmore, the brain of CJ Craig, the utter coolness of Bob Dylan, the voice of Ray LaMontagne, a dash of Clark Kent, a smidge of Kermit the frog, a sprinkle of Liz Lemon & a fist full of Jim Halpert. He would also have the style of Joseph Gorden Levitt in 500 Days of Summer and the boyish charm of Hugh Grant in Sense and Sensibility/Notting Hill. He would also play a mean guitar, make a kick ass sandwich, do a killer impression of Alf and be an excellent doodler.

Just thought I should write this down somewhere just in case one day I find this person I will have proof I thought of him first.

Bruce Wayne Takes Central Park

Last Saturday the best friends and our new soon to be best friend and permanent gang member (The very innocent 50's-esq let's go hang out with the gang tonight kind of way. Not the let's go shoot up a school yard kind of way), Susan Waits and I had a lovely brunch. Afterwards we decided to enjoy some of the little surprising sunny weather New York decided to give us, by taking a walk in Central Park. Well of course this meant we had to go pick up Bruce Wayne. Susan's adorable little pup Bruce Wayne, of course. Let me tell you that cute little thing is the talk of the upper west side. Everybody in the park wanted to pet him or sniff him (the puppies, not the people) or plain take him home. Here are some shots of the wonderful smooshy face (this is his actual nickname not something I came up with). It totes fits though, don't you think? Oh and a shout out to Susan's mom, who apparently loved my past photo of the pup! I was inspired to do a shoot of the smooshy cause of you. :)

Mara, My Jersey Girl Muse

This weekend I went photo crazy. I mean I usually have a camera in my hand but this weekend I had so many beautiful subjects at my disposal. The gorg and uber photogenic Mara Gannon who has become somewhat of a muse for me was over at the Apt Sunday for her Glenn Close/Fatal Attraction recreation. I knew I had to take advantage of her being out of Jersey and in front of my camera. The shoot was very raw and natural. She stripped down just a little and I worked with all natural light from my 2nd floor Harlem apartment window and my 50 mm lens. She was stunning (as always) and I'm really happy with what came out.

Recreating the Classics Part Deux!

I shot another batch of recreations this weekend. This round we did Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde and Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction (classic in it's own right). Again, I had wonderful friends who fit the parts perfectly and my trusty bff by my side coaching them and other bestie manning the reflector.

This lady was so striking. So much life in her face. I snapped two quick shots without looking before I had to get off the train. So lucky to have gotten this one.

Recreating the Classics....My Way

Currently I'm obsessed with old movies. Well I guess I've always been obsessed with them but recently I have actually been watching a lot of them. In old films every scene is such a perfect photograph. There is so much beauty and passion in every clip. I have been printing off these inspiring still images from classic films and hanging them in my room for personal inspiration. Inspiration in my life and of course in my photography. So of course like I always do I gathered several of my gorgeous and always willing friends and made them pose for me, recreating several scenes from said classic films. With the help of my right hand man and bff Zac, this past weekend we successfully recreated Judy Garland in A Star is Born, Shirley MacLaine and Audrey Hepburn in The Children's Hour and Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. My girls were FAB. Not only did they look the part put they took frame after frame until I was satisified which sometimes took a couple of hours. It was so much fun and I think they turned out really well. More to come....

The Hook-up Conversations or the Best Valentine's Day Ever!

So, this weekend as you know was Valentine's Day. Gotta say not my fave holiday since it usually consists of me never celebrating with a significant other, wah wah. However, this V-day was totally different. One of my dear friends, the talented writer Jessie Rosen, wrote an amazing collection of monologues about relationships and dating and formed a show with them called The Hook-up Conversations. My bff Zac was the SM and my other bff Brittany was in the show and a whole gaggle of other friends from Effable Arts (the artist collective I am involved in) were involved. It was shmashazing to say the least. We laughed and cried at the amazing pieces and their performers and then drank copious amounts of alcohol. Best. Valentine's Day. Ever. Anyway, Friday before the big day there was a rehearsal for said show. I was there to capture some shots of the brilliant actors and a special one of the writer/director/fabulous human being herself, Miss Rosen. Trust!

Cali Kids Get Some New York Lovin'

This weekend two of my best friends from college, who now live in Cali, came in for a little visit. We (the NY based kids) spent the entire weekend lovin' on our Cali kids and giving them a taste of our city. It was a great time. We brunched and went to the park. We played in FAO Schwartz and had ice cream sundae's at Dylan's Candy Bar. We drank copious amounts of PBR at Matchless (fave BK bar) and walked endless NY blocks. I made sure I had my camera wherever we went. Of course most of my subjects included my friends (per usual and too their chagrin) but I got a few shots of city life as well. It was a wonderful weekend with my beautiful friends.

I spent a lot of time with my friends this weekend. I mean I'm always with my friends but I got a lot of one on one time with each of them, along with our wonderful city. There was Alias and Chinese food, Sat morning diner breakfast, dress shopping, fancy pants dinner, Tim Burton at the MOMA, a lot of bed laying, double feature Sunday and a Matt Dillion sighting. Friday night my bff Zac (special appearance by Fuzzy the bear) and I had a little late night photo session. You know. That's what we do. Here are few selections and a couple other shots of my girls. Home for the Holidays

Whenever I'm home my brothers are my main photographic subject. My youngest brother Duncan is well documented, let me tell you. I spent one whole day with both of them in the park, playing video games and running around town taking loads of pictures. They are quite the handful. Christmas day I managed to take a large family photo after the big meal. I'm very proud of it because I actually got my entire family to stand still for more than 10 mins. It was a feat. I was also able to visit my best friend from high school Chell, my goddaughter Madelyn and my other HS bestie and her new baby Abigail. Goodness. The babies. I can't be this old. Oh and of course there are a few shots of some wonderful Southern scenery, my favorite thing to shoot.

I'm on the subway a lot. So is the life of a New Yorker. I also like to take pictures of people when they are unaware. I'm creepy. I know this. Anyway, so begins the subway series.

Ok, so I'm backtracking a bit but here are some sexy photos I did of my gorg friend Mara a few months ago with the equally photogenic Devin. It was absolutely freezing and the always willing Mara was wearing a sheet (yes that's a bed sheet) but the photos really came out better and HOTTER than I expected. Props to Devin

So, I tend to make my friends pose for me a lot. Most of the time the conditions are cold and uncomfortable but this time I gathered some of my gorgeous besties and we took over Grand Central. It was just a fun night of photos in our favorite city.

Ok, so clearly I'm a little late to the party with this whole blogging thing. Better late than never I suppose. Anyway, I thought it was time to jump on it. I have had a tumblr for a little while but the good ole blogspot seems to be a better idea.

I'm the photo editor for http://www.broadway.com/ by day and photographer of all things not Broadway well pretty much all other times....head shots, engagement pics, weddings, concerts, random fashion shoots where I make my friends go out in uncomfortable conditions and pose in ridiculous manners and of course random strangers on the street. I don't discriminate. So, here we go. First Post Time.

I took some engagement photos of the adorable couple Lindsey and Andrew when I was home for the holidays. They met while attending Ole Miss (my alma mater as well, HOTTY TODDY). I took their shots in our wonderfully Southern college town Oxford, MS. They were tons of fun and easy to push around, hehe. Enjoy!
